Probate Court

The Probate Court has jurisdiction over the probate of wills and the administration of estates, oversees trusts, determines title to real and personal property, and can construe wills.  In addition, the Judge appoints guardians for minors and mentally retarded persons, appoints conservators of the estate and person and oversees their actions.

For the protection of minor children, the Court has jurisdiction over removal of guardians of minor children, determines paternity, termination of parental rights, approves adoptions and grants custody and visitation.  In addition, the Court has the authority to commit a person suffering from severe mental illness to an appropriate facility and has sole jurisdiction in alcohol and drug commitments.

It is the Probate Court that grants name changes and issues marriage waivers.  For the convenience of the residents of Plainville, the Court handles passport applications.

Monday - Thursday           8:00am - 12:00pm; 1:00pm - 3:30pm
Friday                                8:00am - 12:00pm

*The Court is closed to the public between 12:00pm and 1:00pm for lunch
